In a rising real estate market, home buyers sometimes consider buying smaller, cheaper homes that work now, but might not work in 5 or 10 years. That is fine, if buyers incorporate growth plans into their home ownership strategy. 
One way to develop a home ownership strategy is to do a “Vision of Home” writing exercise.

 

 

Buyers can describe their 5 to 10 year vision as if they’re living in the home they’re preparing to buy. This exercise helps them plan space needs and consider future costs of adding on vs. buying larger in a different area now. The exercise also helps them make smart loan decisions, like whether or not to buy the interest rate down—something to consider if planning to be in the home long-term.
