Why Bother?

There is an old story about a man walking along a beach. The beach was filled with starfish that had washed up on a high tide the night before. Soon the hot sun would begin drying them out and killing them. As the man walked along, he periodically picked up and flung a starfish back into the ocean. Soon the man crossed paths with another man who said to him, “Why bother throwing them back? There’s so many, it won’t make any difference.” The first man picked up another starfish, and as he tossed it into the ocean he said, “It made a difference to that one.”

What small difference can you make through volunteering in your community? Take a look around. Chances are you'll notice at least a few things that are either overlooked or are in need of a little help. Maybe there's a non-profit organization or school that needs its lawn mowed. Maybe a group needs help gathering donations. Perhaps there's a child-care center that would love to have an adult read books to the kids once a week. Perhaps you can pick up trash on a local trail.
